Advantages and Disadvantages of Bioplastic

Introduction

Bio plastic industry is growing very fast, it is estimated that it by 2024 it production will grow from 1.5 million tons to 2..4 Million ton. Demand in bioplastic is growing. Despite the demand its use in 1% as compared to crude based plastic.

Bioplastics are generally.

1.       These are plant based  and organic

2.       Compostable, Biodegradable

3.       Recycling is easy.

4.       Can make allied product with Crude oil based platic. Compatible with oil based plastic.

Advantages of Bio-Plastic

1.   Use of crude oil plastic will be reduced so that micro plastic formation will reduce which was causing harm to environment.

2.     Bioplastic have same property as synthetic plastic so that they can also perform injection molding and will produce same product . Some cased bioplastic is more stronger and light weight.

3.  Bioplastic will cause less impact on environment. It will biodegrade naturally and can be compostable.

4.   Many bioplastic are naturally occurring and will not produce CO2. They don’t have any carbon foot print.

5.  Common bioplastics, such as starch-based PLA and PHB, are non-toxic and of ‘no health concern’

6.       Their usage may improve the value-add of a product through a green marketing campaign.

Disadvantages of bioplastics

1.   Expensive: - Bio plastic is more expensive than any convention synthetic plastic like Polyethylene and PET. They are 2 to 3 times more expensive.

2.  Large Area: - Bio Plastic requires large area for cultivation. These are terrestrial crop, that may cause food supply issues. Industry requires almost 3% of cultivation land for production bioplastic.

3.     Short Life:-  Bioplastic have shorter life span as compared with convention synthetic Plastic. E.g. some algae based bioplastic breaks down in water in just an hour.

4.  Disposable: - Being compostable, bioplastic requires specific procedure to dispose those bio plastic wastes. It requires large area for land filling bio plastic.

5.  General Fit: - These bio plastic are fit for certain applications only and very bad for other applications.

6.       Processing Cost:- Bio Plastic  processing requires very costly procedures.
